I recently came across an old essay I wrote for the Summer, 1995 issue of Green Egg Magazine, the publication of the Church of All Worlds, with which I had a relationship at the time. I decided to post it on my Open Salon blog, here: http://open.salon.com/blog/jeffm23/2011/11/07/neo-pagan_dead_heads Hope you enjoy it. P.S., It so happened that just as I was about to submit it, Jerry died (still hurts to think about); so I added the epilog. P.P.S., I hope this is the proper place to put this, it's not really clear...

Without knowing where this is I would have to guess somewhere in Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, Nebraska, Illisnois -- somewhere on the Great Plains anyway... It is a great picture. The rainbow is as clearly and sharply defined as I have ever seen it. And then there is the quality of light on one side and dark on the other. one has to wonder if there was a tornado in the area. I would like to know what kind of camera took this picture and at what settings. Thank you for posting WharfRat3323, indeed I am smiling on a cloudy day!

i am ripping a 3 disc Dead show 6-18-03 from the Merriweather post pavilion from cd on to my dell inspiron. the first disc went on fine but when i put disc 2 or 3 in the computer thinks they are the same disc. i give the discs different names and name all the tracks and it still dos not make a difference. if some one could help a young deadhead out it would be "grately" appreciated.

what an unexpectedly fantastic weekend i had! nowhere to go and all weekend to get there. we've had less than 2" of rain since mid-may and now........ 5" in less than 48 hrs. stayed home with lots of great jg/ms and gogd and watched it rain all weekend; even made a new friend too! :))))). so nice just to watch it rain and rain and rain. did i mention that i made a new friend? and something great has come out of the ruthless, extreme drought this summer: intense fall colors. the maples are magnificent and the oak leaves which normally turn a disappointing dull brown are putting on a long lasting show of vivid maroon, yellow, orange and copper ----- it's times like this i truly feel spoiled. it's too late (she's gone) > he's gone > they're gone > we're all gone........ missed jam opportunity? ...........( had time to think this weekend). :D wishing you all a terrific weekend too !!!!!

deadhead smile....... :) 1. rosie mcgee's "dancing with the dead" e-book is affordable and is simply an outstanding read if you haven't yet. it would make a fine addition to anyone's hard drive and is worth the price just for the pics alone. 2. key-z productions sells affordable and beautiful full sheets of original perforated blotter art. i recently purchased one (code # lsd-25) that has the entire declaration of independence printed on it.......... just beautiful and says it all. tons of cool designs to pick from. unfortunately, these are NOT saturated so they are completely legal (damn!)....... yet beautiful; not to mention it helps the kesey family business. 3. and my personal favorite!!! ........get your sweety-pie a GIANT bag of weed. :) -- yeah, this one's more expensive but i'll bet there will be a lot of sharing goin' on just out of appreciation that santa was sooooooooo kind.... :)))))))))))))) -- great stocking-stuffer! :D happy holihaze everybody! :)

but then "He's Gone" came into my head and I perked up immediately. The smile smile smile line got me dancing a little and the rest didn't matter. It's beautiful when music can make this happen.

>> You are not allowed to post new content in the forum. Well HEY NOW I'm not allowed to post new content? Kind of defeats the purpose of offering a forum, am I right? I was excited to notice that it's been 25 years to the day since the 1987 NYE show -- national radio broadcast. GREAT show! I'm disappointed that I can't post new content. That's kind of baffling to me.

Sorry, I haven't been blowing you off; I just found your post - (please refer to my first moniker for all future references :) I will dip into #3 and attempt to put something together. BTW, you run too much. I'm on my feet all day and my knees hurt just reading about running past 8 feet, much less 8 miles.

I actually did give this quite a bit of thought and I kept coming up with nothing. Then I got home from work yesterday and saw this: quite possibly the best "Dead Cover" of the year, imho, and it should make anyone smile, smile, smile. so, for this holiday season, how about simply giving the gift of happiness. Some music, a hug, a "Have I told you lately that I love you?", some time volunteered for others or just some time well spent with family or friends in any manner. Never enough of it going around... . . and . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . a material gift during the holidays never hurt anyone... and what says "Happy Holidaze" more than a big ol' grocery bag heaping with blonde hash? Just double-bag it, put a bow on it and set it under the tree. Come Christmas morning there'll be plenty to celebrate with for one and all. So you have to take out a home improvement loan; banks are easing lending restrictions and interest rates are still quite low. Besides, you're not lying when you say you'll be doing some home improvement. You and your friend's moods will improve significantly :)) Happy Holidaze {@};-}

Cloud Surfing Grateful Dead Hour, Dead to the World (KPFA), the music of David Gans, and more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- « Grateful Dead Hour no. 1368 Submitted the manuscript Today is the day I send my book manuscript in! It’s called This Is All a Dream We Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead. I wrote it in collaboration with my friend and colleague (and neighbor) Blair Jackson. It is set to be published in the fall of 2015 by Flatiron Books. This is the end of a three-year process that began with a different book. That one was cancelled when the publisher downsized. My agent shopped it around and got no takers (too esoteric), but Bob Miller, the head of Flatiron – who was the editor of my first book 30 years ago and has gone on to an illustrious career (founding head of Hyperion, among other achievements) said he’d love to work with me again and did I have anything else in mind? Blair and I had been kicking around the idea of an oral history, and my agent (who is also Blair’s agent) ordered us to do it. I was able to use a lot of the material I had gathered for the other book, and Blair and I have nearly 80 years of Dead-related journalism between us. We gathered many new interviews over the last year to add to our existing resources. We spent several months working separately, grabbing stories from the interviews and putting them into buckets by year, and then we began stitching things together to weave the tale. That process culminated with an intense period of work over the last week, finalizing everything. On Sunday 11/30, late at night after a long stretch of work, I took a big bong hit and blasted out a bunch of ideas for the intro and sent the file to Blair to respond and refine. That piece turned out to be a good deal closer to coherent and effective than I thought it was at the time, so it only took one or two bounces between us to call it a done deal. The process has been amazingly friction-free. Blair and I have worked together off and on for nearly 40 years, and our editorial voices and sensibilities are similar enough that we have not had any problems creating a unified tone in the work. I just sent the package off to our agent and our editor. There are a few little bits to finish here and there, and we need to come up with eleven photos, but 99% of it is done and we are happy with it. Was listening to American Beauty again and once more felt that Box of Rain was a deeply meaningful song (this sounds stupid as I say it, should express myself better) "in and out the window like a moth before a flame" has always made me think of reincarnation. The box of rain is there for quite a long time but we come and go briefly. Felt the urge to comment. So I found this site, but it's none too easy to post a comment about that track (though there are comments visible). In fact, I haven't managed to yet, so I'm posting here after 30 minutes fruitless searching. As an ageing hippie I'd expect better. Not true that we were all disorganised - I'd expect a far more user-friendly site.

truckineric Thanks for your welcome. If nothing else, this has inspired me to listen to American Beauty again. Still feel Box of Rain is one of those tracks that transcends lots of stuff, describes more than it was even meant to. "This is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago" There's a universe or more behind that line, and I half believe it.
