what an oddity. what a great (re)discovery. Like a GD show, but different. "Mickey Hart and His Heartbeats." Hard to hear some of the Pigpen material (low volume). It is more like what Jerry called a "public rehearsal". lots of acoustic foreplay, with no electric release afterward. (blue) balls of lightning (hopkins) roll along. No complaints, though. It is a true treasure. Thank you to MG for giving the tapes to DaL. And thank you DaL et al for making the project happen.

    I'm a space case... :)
no hidin' that fact. Not offensive either. In fact I was thinking of using that for my user name. As far as the artwork goes, I particularly like the petalless poppy seed pods next the other flowers illustrated. A couple of morning glories would've rounded that bouquet out nicely. Nice artwork again as usual.

Hmmm, I pressed the download button for the Almanac, watched it download, and now can't find it anywhere on my computer. Very weird!

Makes little sense, I agree. I saw the band about 130 times, beginning in 1972. Only went to 10 shows during the entire decade of the 80's, because they were so hit and miss. I know that they did some great shows over those 10 years, but it was just not like the early years. But, if you were a Head who came of age during the Eighties, you might want many of those shows to be officially released. Stands to reason...

14 May '74? Something unheard from the Pigpen era? Sounds awesome. It's one thing to want '80s and '90s shows to be released but blatant hostility, such as expressed by jpreston, is bizarre. As is repeated here regularly, if you don't like it, don't buy it. There's no need for gnashing of teeth. Just listen to your '80s and '90s tapes.

jp, you might have found valid purchase for critiquing the selection with substantive analysis, as did Dwork in The Deadhead's Taping Compendium (see, p.522). Having never heard the show, I was initially discouraged by this assessment until actually listening to about 45 min. of the outrageously crisp Miller SBD on archive.org* - as well as reading some of the attendant reviews (i.e., "No question about it - this is the BIG TIME"); though it must absolutely be my last cash-based musical acquisition for the next 12 months (this after ordering The Smiths' box on amazon today...)/K...nuthin' left to do but :) :) :) * https://archive.org/details/gd1974-05-14.sbd.miller.114462.flac16

I downloaded the epub file on a Samsung tablet, but on my reader the illustrations show only a small part of the picture. I'll see if the .pdf file works better.

The Epub version tries to put a lot of crap on my computer. Wasted about an hour trying to download a reader and then removing the junk it put on my machine. Use the pdf version. I cannot believe that dead.net is going the epub route on it's followers. Very disappointed on getting sold down the river!

Here's a novel idea provide the almanac on a web page. Such a dick move treating your fans like sheep. So many bad marketing decisions since forever. When all that's really needed is an honest approach - consider your audience. And while I'm at it how about you choose concert releases by committee. God forbid you actually turned to your fans for a vote on something like that - no we'll just leave it up to one guy to decide. So many bad decisions that add up to disrespecting your fans who are your customers as well.

pwfurther. You seem like one really unhappy dude. Here's a real novel idea for you. Erase your link to the Grateful Dead, Unsubscribe from their E-Mails, Burn all your cassettes, break all your CD's, erase them from iTunes. That'll show em your no sheep...Have you ever tried just talking to them??? They are VERY Reasonable people. Sarcasm and anger will get you nowhere... Try and have a better tomorow...

....are so many peeps here so anti - Dead?? I think they are not real Deadheads otherwise they'd have a little respect for GD and Jerry Garcia (RIP:(:(:(). I mean, like , if you don't like their "marketing" (it sounds silly to use this term with the Dead!!), why come here anyway??! I'm gonna get their almanac and keep the TRUE music legacy alive:)!!

In the other thread (?) for the 2014 subscription I've already commented on my excitement over this release and what looks like a good year ahead (and subscribed). But I'll say here: I really, REALLY, like the graphics in this almanac. I'll dig around more, but if the artists who did the cover is also doing the 2014 Dave's covers I'll be well content. Speaking of being content: Holy Moley, such odd hostility... but it's worth noting that from what I can see, there are only two people in this thread who've expressed anger (so, hardly a trend). I

Finally got to read through the Almanac. The Dead World Roundup was especially interesting... being in Mass, I didn't even know about the corporate naming threat to the Jerry Garcia theater, glad that got stopped. I gotta say, what Billy is up to sounds the best to me, hanging out on his organic farm in Hawaii, writing his autobiography (oh yes!). I didn't see anything about the artist who designed the Almanac cover art though - I really like it. Could this be the aesthetic for the next series of DavesPicks? Anyone know who this artist is?

"these things are gone forever, over a long time ago" thank you steely dan so any recordings released by the GD (they are a business, like it or not, with lots of marketing) are appreciated. 60s 70s 80s 90s whatever. It's the next best thing to actually being there, which, of course we can't be. I got on the bus on 7/18/82, and still find 60s/70s GD the most compelling. I will not post anything further (furthur...HAHAHAHAHA) about this. Promise.

I understand that its totally probable a youth - grandperson or son-daughter - may have been given the chance for this almanac artwork: so may I be excused from such loyalty reaction. This picture is lacking in the affinity of intellectual promotion i would have expected from the long-range artwork and expressions that the GD Community-Family offered. The big dick, who farted looking, caged in sexuality (rainbow = gay) generics suck. Plese remember that it is not just kitten-holding bozos that created the advanced technnology appreciation of comprehensive musical presenations' generations. Thanks for keeping the faith - but I was tortured by "space case" verbage while touring and at home. So really, did that quivering spacesuit bonehead fart-or what?

First of all I don't feel like a sheep...baah...um sorry! I'm relieved that I came to dead.net because with only 14,000 subscriptions I worry I won't get here in time. Please consider having a larger printing on Dave's Picks as well as other special releases. No reason that anyone "searching for the sound" ever be left wanting.

I kinda love this art, though I have no clue as to the artist or the back story. Not all variations on the skull/skeleton/roses/bolt theme are exactly my dish, but I'm really happy that generations of new artists are finding new ways to work within the genre. How else will the scene stay vibrant for centuries?

just look at all the different envelope art in Dead Letters, which barely scratches the surface of what's in the Archive, thanks to the great Eileen saving it all. And that's still going on, too!

So much nastiness. Sick of all the entitlement and undeserved criticism. If you don't like it don't order it (I love the surprises) and if you aren't happy about the artwork (seriously?) then don't look. Happy to still be here and enjoy everything that comes down the pike from the GD.

Who in their right mind would come on here and criticize the artwork of any GD related item? They have had consistently the best , most recognizable logos and symbols that have lasted for 45 years. Seriously , dont order it , you dont need it.

Stoltzfus, you are right... this is just more evidence of how much great stuff they are putting out right now, a few years ago the release of this previously unheard acoustic set would have been big news, now it's part of a stream of mind blowing releases (returned reels, Veneta, and so on). Can't wait for it (vinyl in this case for me). Though I'm not perhaps as enthused by the Pigpen solo stuff as some are, I'm certainly intrigued. As for the Almanac Art, I hope none of this is directed at me - I've twice written about how much I love the style of this artist, and would like to know who he or she is. As far as I can see there has only been one (rather bizarre) negative comment about the art, so why the big fuss? Seems like it's been pretty positive...

Why are you in such a snoot about the artwork? I thought the artwork and graphics for this almanac were pretty cool and I felt like Rhino really hit it's peak this year with the Spring 77 box. I have artists I don't like (one in particular) but won't call him out cuz I don't want to hurt his feelings. In general, the artwork of Grateful Dead produced stuff is far superior to any other band past and present. Even stuff that doesn't have to do with the covering of a musical release.

Anna, exactly - the May 77 Box was a graphic arts peak for any genre. In fact, one of the reasons I'm so high on this Almanac art is that it kind of reminds of that, only in the sense that it manages to be very different from earlier Dead art styles, while maintaining the tropes that make it instantly recognizable as Dead art. Mary - I must admit, I'm a sucker for SYF images and skulls.
