    Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out some music from a 15 year span in the Grateful Dead's career, 1978-1993.

    Our first stop is on 4/18/78 in Pittsburgh, PA, where we have the first bit of the first set, featuring New Minglewood Blues, Sugaree, Looks Like Rain, Dire Wolf. As we've mentioned before, we're missing the first part of this April 1978 tour (4/6 through 4/16), but what we do have, 4/18 through the end of the second of the tour on 5/17/78, contains some really hot music.

    On the Spring Tour of 1988, Jerry lost his voice on the first night in Hartford, on 4/3/88. The next night he was still not too strong in the vocal department, and by the third night, on 4/5/88, he was a getting close to normal. From that show, we have the first set, featuring Hell In A Bucket > Sugaree > Walkin' Blues, Dire Wolf > It's All Over Now, Bird Song > When I Paint My Masterpiece > Might As Well. In the hundred Dead shows I saw, this was one of only two versions of Might As Well I saw them play.

    From five years later, we have music from the final night of a three night run in Rosemont, IL, on 3/11/93 Help On The Way>Slipknot>Franklin's Tower, Little Red Rooster, Althea. I've heard a lot of really good music through the first five months of 1993, and this Rosemont run featured some really great stuff.

    later on, scarlet became simply a lead-in to fire. I haven't heard 10/14/94 for a while, but i know it's good. the world is a crazy place, y'all.

    The consensus on the final great Scar>Fire has always been 10-14-94 MSG. I'm going to check out that one from Giants you mentioned though...

    The Scarlet>Fire from 6/5/93 is probably the hottest version played since 9/14/90 or any of the great versions from 1991, and certainly the last outstanding version. And if you think that is damning with faint praise, just go give it a listen.

Truth be told, I don't listen to a lot of later '93 stuff (or much '93 for that matter). But, when Dave mentions the 'really good music through the first five months of 1993', I struggle to think of the memorable shows from later in the year. He's right about the early part of the year, there was 2-23, 3-10, 3-24, 3-27 and of course 5-26 and 5-27 Cal Expo to name several I've had tapes of. The only tape that I can remember playing a lot from later '93 was 8-22 from Autzen Stadium in Eugene (although the prior night is the one that tends to get more community wide attention.) Thanks for the music and the notes Dave. The Taper's Section makes Monday great!

If the vault is missing a substantial portion of the tapes from the early part of Spring '78 how come great quality soundboard recordings abound? Does that mean they exist somewhere? I've been confused about this question since I found out Cornell '77 and Red Rocks July '78 are classified MIA and good soundboard recordings circulate.

This week's Rosemont selection- When I was younger, working at a Pharmacy and listening to an audience copy on a portable radio, a Sales rep came in and heard Althea, and commented how he learned to play this on guitar. About half way into the closing jam, he said- I've never heard anything like this before. I can say the same about the sound quality here on the Taper's Section- Thanks!

I'm sure you know that there are many "boards" out there circulating that are not the band's original reels from the particular show. What is the Dead vault copy and what somebody recorded as a first gen. sound board off a direct plug (no other patches between you and the board) is often times not that much different. There are only so many chances to get a direct feed off the board, less than 10 in almost all cases.

...that guy that bought tapes from Betty's storage locker (was it in '85) and wants to sell them back to the Dead. I know the Dead's current position is not to buy back their rightful property, but since this guy bought them perhaps they might negotiate. I'm sure there's more to the story...Thanks for your input folks, it's appreciated.
