    July 1 - July 7, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from the first five years of Brent's tenure with the band, 1979 to 1984.

We'll first make a stop in Easton, PA, on 5/7/79, Brent's first tour with the Grateful Dead, at his fifth show. We don't have a complete tape from this show, but we do have some decent chunks, including this post-Space sequence of Not Fade Away>Black Peter>Around and Around. A couple of things to note: the Not Fade Away comes in at the end, where the tape starts, and that's John Cipollina sitting in on guitar.

From two years later, on 5/16/81, we have the start of the first set from 5/16/81 at Barton Hall at Cornell University, the third and final show at Cornell. From this great venue, we have Feel Like A Stranger, Friend Of The Devil, Me and My Uncle>Big River, Althea.

Our final stop this week is in 4/21/84 in Philadelphia, the final night of a three night run at the Civic Center Arena, and the final show at this venue before the Dead would return to the Spectrum in 1985 for the next decade as their indoor Philly venue of choice. From this show we have the post-Drums sequence of Space>Wharf Rat>Throwing Stones>Not Fade Away.

    Double Wharf Rat
Mikester was living in Philly, Div was in DC and I was in NYC. We met as often as possible on the East Coast swings to hang and enjoy our favorite band of merry music makers. In 1984, the Civic Center was no different (I think the Spectrum was under renovation.) This week's taper section has the last night of the Philly run but two nights before the boys played Wharf Rat during the second set too. I remember wandering out of the 4/21 show repeating to myself "double wharf rat, double wharf rat..." Thanks again Dave for more music from my past! JL

Is there a complete tape in the vault? Would love to see a May 79 show released.

    My Cornell Show!
Not counting the famous 77 show these two latter performances are bookends that don't include the famous night. Why bookends? They played Shakedown>Bertha to open up both second sets. Bertha in the 2nd position of the 2nd set twice? Wow! Amazing! Not really. There was one or two pedestrian Greatest>Berthas to open the 2nd set later in the decade. Then there was Stranger, Althea and Don't Ease in both of these 80s Barton hall first sets. Wow again, just amazing! Don't Ease ended both first sets, incredible DL! Jerry, upon entering the Hall again in 1980, was reported to have said "Not this place again!" Don't know why he didn't like it... acoustics? The point is if he didn't think they had played a ripper of a show in 77 and have fond memories it really was the crowd of deadheads who made that critical decision. The 81 show I saw was so sweet with the Nobody's Jam and Uncle John's Band for the encore. Loved it!
