    Follow the link
The link takes you to a post where the JGB keyboard players' transitions are discussed. Very interesting historically, but also as a glimpse into Garcia's passive-aggressive personality. I rarely read a post of more than 100 words (exaggeration) but this one is worth the time. Very cool.

The Historic Importance Of Jun 4 '78 Santa Barbara
The Grateful Dead headlined the UC Santa Barbara football stadium (capacity around 20,000) on June 4, 1978. The bill was Grateful Dead/Warren Zevon/Elvin Bishop Group/Big Wha Koo. Bishop was an old pal of the Dead's, and Garcia came out and jammed with Bishop and his band on some blues numbers ("Fishin' Blues" and another one, I think). There's not a tape of it, that I'm aware of (David?), although there are some photos. However, Jerry was watching Elvin Bishop's set from backstage, probably waiting to come on, and he was very impressed with Elvin's keyboard player, one Melvin Seals. Afterwards, Garcia shook his hand asked his name. Melvin didn't seem to recall that, but Jerry did, and a few years later Melvin ended up in the Jerry Garcia Band. So the jam with Elvin is the first Jerry/Melvin jam, and I should add that future JGB drummer Don Baldwin was probably on stage too. http://lostlivedead.blogspot.com/2012/09/jerry-garcia1978keyboards-jerr…
