    September 2 - September 8, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll hear Grateful Dead music spanning 15 years, 1974 to 1989, with a stop in 1981 along the way.

Our first selection this week is from 7/25/74 in Chicago, featuring the end of the show, Johnny B. Goode, Uncle John's Band>U.S. Blues, One More Saturday Night; Ship Of Fools. That's a rare Ship Of Fools encore, a song that was new to most ears, as Mars Hotel had been released just a month before, on June 27, 1974.

Next up is music from 7/7/81 in Kansas City, featuring the end of the second set, Space>Truckin'>Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad>Black Peter>I Need A Miracle>Good Lovin'. This a good little tour with plenty of hot shows.

Lastly this week is music from 7/18/89 at Alpine Valley, the penultimate Grateful Dead show at Alpine. This concert's video was shown in movie theatres in 2012 to great response. From the start of the second set we have Sugar Magnolia>Scarlet Begonias>Man Smart, Woman Smarter>Eyes Of The World. The transition from Sugar Magnolia to Scarlet Begonias is seamless, one of those transitions that sounds like a perfectly composed piece of music.

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault.

No indication of a release, but we all know the night at the movies got great reviews & the show meets the criteria for release. I imagine they would release the show as a limited edition CD/DVD Combo. Probably 8,900 copies. Just speculation. Price would be similar to the other productions Rhino has been involved with Egypt, Crimson, Red, white & blue.

Is anyone aware if there are any plans to release this great show? I would be neither surprised nor disappointed if they made a big box set out of the audio and video of this run. This run has to be one of the most solid three-show runs ever. It's quite a treat to see Garcia smile so much.

Most of those three shows (which I've read good things about) only exist in Audience form currently. (save for Utica in which there is a soundboard recording available for most of the show) If David dropped one of those shows on us, especially Boston or Hartford it would be quite a lucky treat. As for me, I am partial to the MSG shows and although good recordings of both exist, I'd want them as official releases. Really, listen to the Bird Song it just drips with intensity.

I would love to see Queen Jane Approximately, Desolation Row, or the super rare Visions of Johanna. As an added bonus Knockin' on Heaven's Door or Baby Blue encore. I always like to see those included.I think a Berkeley show from April 86' has a nice Visions of Johanna. My best bet for the next Dave's Pick is on 80' , 81' or 84'. After reading his comments about 81' over the last few months and hearing some shows. I believe he is looking to pick a show from this run in July. 7-5-81, I have heard pieces of (Mexicali Blues & Althea) very nice stuff. The other show based solely on setlist is 7-14-81. Both shows include Shakedown Street & Sailor > Saint. I am hoping for a show from 1980 although I did hear some Late August 83' on Sirius & some of the second set music was funky and fast. Drums > Space was very interesting

I hope it's a 2 show pick from MSG 3-9 and 3-10. They were on fire for both of these shows and Jerry's leads are incredibly inventive on songs like Half Step>Franklin's (great transition), Scarlet>Fire, and Bird Song! I believe David has said he's partial to the 3-10 show, but 3-9 should not get short shrift in my book. Here is when portions of these shows have been featured in these parts:3-9-81 Deep Elem Blues, Bird Song - 3/5/07 3-9-81 China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider>Samson and Delilah, Ship of Fools, Estimated>Uncle John's Band - 3/9/09 3-9-81 Feel Like A Stranger, Althea, C C Rider, Ramble On Rose>El Paso, Deep Elem Blues - 1/30/12 3-10-81 Scarlet>Fire, Satisfaction>Brokedown Palace - 3/5/07 3-10-81 Mississippi Half-Step>Franklin’s Tower>Me & My Uncle - 3/10/08 3-10-81 Mississippi Half-Step>Franklin's Tower>Me & My Uncle, Must Have Been The Roses>Little Red Rooster, Don't Ease Me In - 11/22/10 3-10-81 Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain>Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance - 3/9/09

Yes I would love a release from the 80's. Especially from summer 1985Take a listen to the Blossom show or Hershey park from June of 85. The second sets from both are exceptional and space is brain melting material

As recently as of Friday night. I heard the 1st 3 songs Stranger, Althea, & CC Rider. All fine versions. As far as a 2 show pick I don't think that will happen unless its a compilation. The Dave's series is a 12 CD set with 1 bonus disc. This format only has 3 disc that remain. Hopefully next year we get a 2 show release. I always loved those 2 show releases during Dicks Pick. Ex. Volume 25, 20, & 14. Last week, I did mention this run of shows along with the others from this tour before the Dead went off to Europe. 1981' featured 2 European tours, what an interesting year. 3-14-81 has a great setlist with the I Need A Miracle > Bertha > Good Lovin' sequence. Dave seems to be a fan of this. 8-31-80 also has this sequence & I was very impressed. Well worth a listen, a great piece. One of the best i've heard since the 4 song opening sequence from 4-29-84. I'm pretty sure Dave featured 2 songs from the 3 night run from Feb. 26-28 on 30 days of dead. It seems to be a trend that music featured in 30 Days has been on previous releases. TMNS = 4-24-78, Here Comes Sunshine = 11-17-73. Slipknot > Franklins = vol. 4. Some of the 81' shows featured on 30 Days are 2-26 & 2-28, 7-11 , & 12-9. So if it is an 81' pick it could be out of those shows. Hopefully there is a show with Stranger, Althea, Bird Song, and Sailor > Saint & Shakedown Street. But that's a lot to ask for in 1 show, but 2 like u said it could be done. Thrown in a great Candyman & Brokedown Palace encore and boooy that would be a winner

The Dead had their equipment on the East Coast prior to Europe and decided to add these shows (Boston Garden; Utica Auditorium; Hartford Civic Center) before the tour started. There were many bright spots in 1981 and these three shows were one of them... Sometimes you have to look before the logical highs to find the true highs. When was the last time you EVER heard Franklin's Tower to end the first set (without it's mates, to boot?)

I loved the four shows I saw in the Spring of '81, each had a different mood/pace and the setlists were crazy. Some shows I did not see though (e.g. MSG, UMD) were way better and sound releasable to my ears. However, I thought the year peaked later, perhaps with the EXCELLENT three weekend shows (Lehigh, Buffalo, D.C.) before the Fall trip to Europe. And the New Years show in '81 was a flat out scream, and I think the end of a remarkable ~28 month stretch with no-longer-new-guy Brent.
