Summer Of Love - Free Concert - Nothing Better!

I spent a week at Expo with my brothers and father. One day we heard there was going to be this free concert, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Apparently they were in town for a show that night, and had nothing better to do than set up and play an impromptu show. I was a pretty hip 15, had seen The Byrds two years before on their "Turn! Turn! Turn!" tour, and was pretty psyched. I was more into the Airplane than the Dead, but as far as my brothers and I were concerned, we were not gong to do anything else, for sure. It has been a long time, and many dreams and brain cells have come and gone since that day, so I can't even remember which band played first, but I do remember the encore. Imagine combining these bands, at that time. Three drummers, two amazing bass players at the peak of their powers, all those guitars, all those voices - the question, really, was what would they do? They got a groove going, Jerry and Jorma traded licks for a while - it seemed like eternity but it was probably just about ten minutes - then Marty Balin grabbed a mike and sang, "Let me tell you 'bout my baby!" They did the first verse of "Gloria," led the crowd in a "G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria!" chant for a couple of minutes, then Jerry and Jorma took off and explored the cosmos for a good long while, and never really came back to finish the second verse. It was a magical, transcendent moment for me. Even though I saw the Dead dozens of times after this, and the Airplane a month after Woodstock (in a little college gym, for $3), and even got to hang out with Paul Kantner and Grace Slick once, this was a touchstone moment for me. I have been unable to find a tape of this show. I am a bit baffled as to why - perhaps because it was spur of the moment, unannounced, no tapers were present - but if anyone ever hears of a tape being available, please let me know. And by all means, turn your amps up to 11!

Morning Dew, Viola Lee Blues, Alligator, Dancin...List is uncertain. This was based on a basic setlist I wrote down at the time. I definitely recall Morning Dew, Viola Lee Blues and Alligator. Dancin' is uncertain, and after 40 years, my memory is rusty.

1967? I was a mere stripling of 16 then. I remember that show like it was yesterday. Me and my incipient-hippie friends decided to catch the Jefferson Airplane (who I was really into then, [as I am today]) and the Dead at a free outdoor concert, as the Dead were wont to give back in '67. We arrived about noon, when the free concert was suppose to begin. The Dead opened. I was intrigued by the look of this gang of ugly misfits. ;-D I was also intrigued by the music, though it would take a week for the music to sink in. Man, what a scene!!!! Hippies as far as the eye could see, and as far as I was concerned it was heaven, for an incipient hippie!!! The gang I was with were all high-school buddies, and no one wanted to let on that the other was smoking weed! ;-) So I moved away from my friends, so I could catch a passing joint. I purposely avoided the passed jugs of Kool-Aid, though! ;-D The Airplane were throwing out small buttons that were marked "Jefferson Airplane Loves You". I got one, but lost it years ago. :-( Man, what glorious memories!

I was intrigued by the Jefferson Airplane and had seen them in Vancouver BC I had never seen the Dead but was diggin' to do so. I was 16 also and visiting for the summer to go to expo 67. Man, I said what an odd looking bunch and the kid on guitar looks like some skinny gal. The music started and I thought gee, never heard anything quite like this it goes on and on and meanders all over how strange, but, how interesting Hmm? Someone passes a joint, bingo, hey now the music sounds very interesting and imaginative and....the rest is history. 150 shows in total over the bands whole history. thanks

Man my grandmother was lucky!!!! She was living in Montréal at the time and went to most of the pavilions during some time that summer (don't know the exact date) with some of her friends and remembers walking by a spot with lots of people and a band playing (possibly Grateful Dead or the Airplane???) Damn if only I was born 43 years previous (born in 1991) I would have made it my mission to attend the 6th of August 1967 it sucks being born in the 90's nothing exciting or revolutionary is happening.

This is one of the shows I’d really have enjoyed myself. My brother went, and he said the set list had Viola Lee Blues, Alligator, and Dancin' In The Street. I was goofing around that morning and too hungover to get out of bed. ::: snoring aid :::
