My First Show
Grateful Dead opening for Mamas & the Papas @ Berkeley C.Th.
It was January 1967, and I was in the 3rd grade. My Mother took me to see the Mamas and the Papas at Berkeley Community Theater. As a naive 10 year old, I felt uncomfortable sandwiched in between 2 young women in SUPER SUPER short mini-skirts, (gulp), which was the fashion at the time. We were in about the 10th row. Being a British Invasion and Monkees Fan, I had never heard of the Grateful Dead, and I had never seen "hippie" looking people before, so it kind of shocked me, especially seeing Pigpen (Ron McKernan). I honestly don't remember any of their songs, except that it was extremely LOUD, but I do remember the Mamas and the Papas, that their songs were beautiful live, and their vocal harmonies were amazing. In my teen years, I started collecting many Dead Concert Posters, hung out in Berkeley, and often saw that Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders were playing in Berkeley at The Freight and Salvage and Keystone venues. Unfortunately I was too young to attend. I worked as an usher at Berkeley Comm. Theater, in my Sophomore and Junior years of high school, and saw many amazing concerts, but never the Dead again. It was only years later that I would discover the magic of the Grateful Dead and their incredible music. Maybe as a 10 year old a higher power, was trying to tell me something, but I wasn't ready to receive it...better late then never. BTW, if anyone has a set list or memories of this show, please post it. Thank you!
