The Strangest Show
The band was tight and strong that night. Little or no wasted time in the abbreviated set format.

But what I remember most about that night was the Beach Boys' performance. Though a Deadhead, I loved the Beach Boys too, and had never seen them perform. I was absolutely astonished when I saw Brian Wilson come out with the band. He had finally ventured out on the road for the first time in years, and there he sat, a big hulking figure at the piano, while throughout the set, Mike Love pointedly teased and belittled him to the point of cruelty. The others just looked on, embarrassed. It was like watching a dysfunctional family:

Mike announced they were going to do the old Chuck Berry tune, "Rock and Roll Music," because, as Mike rather smarmily remarked, "We all love rock and roll music." Pause. "Right, Brian?"

No response.

"Brian...?"

Brian, softly: "Yeah."

Mike: "Well, Brian, how does it go?"

Silence.

"Briiiiiaaaannnn..."

Silence.

Mike, playing to the crowd the whole time: "Can you AT LEAST give us the first verse--- BRIAN????"

Brian, staring down at the keys, haltingly whispers out the words, pausing many times, but he gets them right:
"I got no kick against modern jazz/Unless they try to play it too darn fast."

Mike: "That's it, let's go!" and they launch into the song.

I was mortified. Somebody ought to have pulled a "Pete Townshend" on that SOB and swatted him off the doggone stage.

I can tell you a little more about the BB set. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Out of the Fog

I had a small recollection of this show. I remember Santana playing on Not Fade Away. What I had a hard time with was when this show was. I moved from SF to Lake Tahoe this month. I DON'T remember the Beach Boys AT ALL! I have become a huge fan of theirs over the years. The 6 part harmonies they do are truly amazing! Saw them just a few years ago and they still got it!

Amazing Grace DID NOT follow US Blues

I have an old cassette boot of this and I am on some sort of trivial personal crusade to set the record straight about this show ... Joan Baez came out after the Dead finished US Blues and introduced the members of the band, then she called all the musicians that had performed that day out onto the stage, and they all sang a Joan staple titled "Bridging the Gap." So Amazing Grace DOES NOT follow US Blues ... I can prove it.

Joan sang "All nite Man"

I passed out flyers that I made that said, "Young Enuf to Dance! Young Enuf To Die!" with a chick in shooting pose in camoflage. keep your character, enjoy living, share your fortune, OXOX Merple Reddin
