First Show
Thirty Years Ago Today
only front-row show - picked the right one
This was the only show I ever tried to get to the front row for, and I picked a good one. Dashed in, and camped out directly in front of Phil. His antics to open the show are well-documented here - it fully ripped off my tripping face. If you're a Sirius XM listener, this is the "Why Don't We Do It" version they play, even though it's listed as a Cali show. And then the shortest first set ever -- 6 songs, under an hour, but not a single. wasted. note. It was also my first out of body Dead experience: completely lost in Bird Song, opened my eyes, and was looking down at Jerry. I swear he caught my eye, brought me down to earth and took the song even higher. Amazing. Then we could hear their banter about playing "Dancin'": Weir: "you want to do it now?" Jer: "Hell, yeah, man!" <noodling> Weir (to crowd): "Did you ever just know you're not gonna remember the chords?" Blistering from start to finish, and "Deal" was epic - crowd cheered for solid 5 minutes after the band left for the break. I swapped out my front-row station with some fellow travelers for the second set. High-energy Shakedown, relentless drums->Space; it was the Easter service, so the traditional "Morning Dew," which was particularly dramatic and spectacular. Even Day Job couldn't keep this from being etched in memory.
