Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we wrap up our January listening with music from the end of summer in 1978, 1979, and 1983.
First stop this week is on 9/2/78 at Giants Stadium, just before the Dead left the USA for Egypt, their second giant New Jersey show in a row to celebrate Labour Day. From this huge show, we have Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain, one of the biggest and most interesting versions of this combination ever played.
From a year later at Madison Square Garden on 9/5/79, we have the start of the first set of the middle night of a three night run in New York, featuring Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Franklin's Tower ; Mama Tried> Mexicali Blues ; Peggy-O ; Cassidy.
Lastly this year, from four years later on 8/31/83 in Eugene, OR, we have the start of the first set, featuring Alabama Getaway > Greatest Story Ever Told ; Dupree's Diamond Blues ; Me And My Uncle > Mexicali Blues ; West L.A. Fadeaway ; Hell In A Bucket. This is a year into West L.A.'s existence, and it had settled into a terrific groove by this point.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
